Most recent book read: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, by Dee Brown.
Good, albeit sad, stuff. I try to find a silver lining in everything, and so, without meaning any disrespect to Big Eagle and the Santee Sioux, derive plenty amusement from my favorite quote: "But for the cannon I think we would have taken the fort."
Asymmetrical warfare indeed.
Current book: The Golden Age of the Moors, Ivan van Sertima, ed.
It is somewhat academic, being, apparently, a compilation of anthropological texts trying to agree on what is signified by the term "Moor," so that discussion may proceed from that common understanding. So far no agreement, but various nice allegations of intellectual dishonesty and race treachery among the Academics-w/-Chips-on-Shoulder-&/or-axes-to-grind. I don't have enough knowledge to understand it in context yet. But should have somewhat more information at least, if I ever finish reading it.
Most recent musical coup: six days worth of what is described as "Indian Classical Traditional and Fusion" music. I'm think I'm in it for the classical, but can't always tell.
I think the most excitement around the officeplace lately was when the Hollywood Video down the block closed, selling all its stock.
I found three gems: The Proposition (gritty australian western penned by legendary postpunk songwriter Nick Cave), and two Jim Jarmusch favorites: Down By Law (staring legendary musical figures Tom Waits and John Lurie, and featuring the US debut of Roberto Benigni), and Mystery Train.
