No Such Authority

Dear Norm,

In light of the
recent revelations that
the commander in chief
inherently has the authority
to listen to the private
conversations of
American citizens,

or if he does not,
was authorized by Congress
to spy domestically,

or if he was not,
briefed Congressional leaders
fully on the program
from its inception,

or if he did not,
must surveil citizens anyway
because the FISA court is
cumbersome and populated
with literal-minded
rule followers
(who may not love America enough),

and if it were not,
has already saved America
from fear and terror and
the erosion of American values,

and if it did not,
we're at war so anything goes,
my question to you is,

should we, the surveilled people,
still be watching one another
and reporting our suspicions
of our neighbors to you,

or does the president
already have it all in hand?

Sincerely,
